Clay is a fundamental ingredient that is very close to material made by repetition and accumulation of life and death. A series of work begins with breathing ‘life’ into moist clay and ends with ‘death’ of the material when it is fired. This circle of life and death, including our lives, is the providence of nature.
At one point, when I realize I am merely a microorganism in this continuity , a forgotten perspective as such becomes the beginning of the story. Eventually, this story allows for a “zoomed out” perspective through which we can consider numerous stories of people as a concentrated point or even the entire world, nature and the earth as a single inextricable point.
By then, we experience curious pleasure and freedom. I can guess that the unknown stories are never silent, but rather progressing fiercely in their own ways. So, I approach my relationship with them by tangling and detangling them arbitrarily. The resulted shape could be various types of landscapes and images, an unfixed existence that of imaginative expression. To be sure, my calculated gesture and act are nothing.
However, the relationship between these microorganisms turns into a set of activities that form the world. The final shape and its variations will evoke a range of emotions. I hope to share these with you. Thus, I enter, and I exit. I approach them. I strive to approach. An open-ended story with unfathomable depths.
흙이라는 근원적 재료는 생사의 반복과 축적으로 이루어진 물질에 가장 가깝다. 일련의 흙작업은 촉촉한 물기를 머금고 있는 흙의 상태로 ‘생’을 불어넣는 것을 시작으로, 불로 구워 마무리된 ‘사’를 보여준다. 이러한 순환은 사람을 포함한 자연의 섭리이기도하다.
어느 순간 이러한 연속성에서 나는 그저 미물이라는 생각이 세상을 볼 때, 잊고 있었던 시각에 대한 이야기로 시작되고, 이는 사람들의 수많은 이야기들을 응집된 하나의 점으로 혹은 세상, 자연이 얽혀있는 지구를 하나의 점으로 보는 줌아웃의 시각에 다다르게 된다.
이즈음 되면 묘한 쾌감과 자유로움이 일어난다. 내가 알지 못하는 그들의 이야기들이 침묵하고 있는 것이 아닌 그들의 방식대로 치열하게 진행되고 있음을 미루어 짐작할 수 있게 된다. 그래서 그들과 나의 관계를 작위적으로 얽히고설키고 그리고 풀어간다. 그 모습은 여러모습의 풍경도, 이미지도 될 수 있는 정해져 있지 않은 실존의, 상상의 표현일 것이다. 물론 아무것도 아니다. 나의 계산된 작은 손짓과 행위는.
그러나 이러한 미물들의 관계가 행위들의 집합을 이루어 세상을 이루었으리라. 그리고 그 모습은 다양한 변주들로 보는 이로 하여금 여러 감정들을 불러일으키게 될 것이다. 나는 그것들을 공유하고자 한다. 즉, 나는 그 속에 들어가고 나온다. 그리고 그들에게 다가간다. 아니 다가가 보련다. 그 끝을 알 수 없는, 열린 결말처럼.
