허욱 (b.1973)
Heo Wook (b.1973)
Since studying in France in 1993, Heo Wook has cultivated his own distinct formative language based on the concept of <CheomCheom(添添)>, which translates to "continuously adding and adding." For over 30 years, he has persistently explored this methodology, unfolding a unique artistic realm that traverses the boundaries of painting, object, and architecture.
The concept of <CheomCheom(添添)> originated from an experience during his time as a student in Paris. Inspired by traditional East Asian painting techniques, he covered four long tables with a large cloth and applied water to pull it taut. During this process, he discovered a fold naturally revealed where the tables met. It was not a drawn line, but rather a "boundary" formed by the intersection of planes. This serendipitous discovery became the point of departure that opened up his artistic world.
Heo Wook’s work begins with the act of drawing a line from the boundary of one edge to another. The line divides and dismantles the canvas, then undergoes a process of recombination and synthesis to construct a new structure. This is not a mere repetition, but a progressive formative process encompassing all physical and mental acts of adding, subtracting, and at times, pausing. He refers to this continuous process of accumulation and variation as <CheomCheom>.
For Heo Wook, <CheomCheom(添添)> signifies the entire trajectory: from the initial encounter with an object, to tracing lines along its edge boundaries, and then repeating and varying those lines to conceive new forms. As the acts of adding and subtracting accumulate, painting becomes an object, and the object, in turn, expands into an architectural space.
To the artist, boundary lines, starting lines, and connecting lines do not serve to block or partition space; rather, they are lines that unlock new possibilities. Instead of solely expressing the artist's subjectivity, the line is a collective entity co-created by space, body, and material. It is an "Open Line" that ceaselessly generates and broadens relationships. Such a line is not intended to finalize a single shape, but is instead a line of process, sustaining ongoing generation and transformation.
In this way, Heo Wook’s work freely transcends the borders between painting and architecture, the two-dimensional and the three-dimensional, and object and space. Valuing the process of generation and evolution over a finalized outcome, his <CheomCheom(添添)> is a continuous, present-progressive artistic practice. It constantly expands the possibilities of painting through a novel formative language defined as "object-like painting and painting-like objects."
