3. Always consider an unfinished work as complete (As Kenji Miyazawa said, “Permanently unfinished is complete.” ).
4. Stains, dirt, wrinkles, smudges, uneven paint, bleed-through, mistaken lines, hesitant lines, lines that go outside the intended area,
lines that couldn’t be erased, and lines that were stopped midway — all these should be kept visible as part of the process (so the progress up to completion can be seen).
Architectural historian and architect Terunobu Fujimori previously divided modern architecture into "red" and "white" categories in his book.
The "white" category refers to the typical modern buildings that look like white boxes.
The "red" category, on the other hand, describes buildings that are not so clean and as clean as the “white” ones but rather express the texture of their materials,
making them appear "dense and hairy."
Naturally, Tokyo Drawing falls into the “red” category, but that alone is not enough,
so let me add a bit more. Essentially, it represents a “red” category that has digested the “white” one. A purely “dense red” could end up looking too rustic,
so it is crucial to emphasize that it is a “red” that has passed through modern design.
To elaborate further, it means that this “red” has absorbed modern design,
been overrun by the “Westernization” that became our tradition after the war,
and sincerely faced the wave of consumerism,
passing through the realm of minimalism as well.
Given its exposure to numerous influences,
it could not remain pure or achieve a high degree of “refinement.”
It lacks a strong academic element; instead,
it cherishes more vulgar aspects, influenced by consumerism.
Consequently, Tokyo Drawing inevitably exhibits straightforward
and starkly realistic qualities in its appearance.
That is what Tokyo Drawing is.

Gallery ColonB is pleased to present In My Room, Seoul, a solo exhibition by Japanese graphic designer and artist Kitada Tetsuya (KITADA TETSUYA, 北田哲也). This exhibition is co-organized with CREATIVE SPACE HAYASHI in Chigasaki, Japan, and marks the artist’s first major introduction to Korean audiences.
The title In My Room, Seoul stems from Kitada’s unique perspective of treating his personal room not just as a living space, but as an exhibition site where everyday life and artistic creation coexist. His works construct a character universe shaped by fragments of emotion, childhood sentimentality, and traces of popular culture—offering more than simple cuteness by capturing layered narratives and the spirit of an era.
Spanning across drawing, graphic design, and publishing, Kitada’s oeuvre encapsulates a distinct visual language and emotional resonance. This exhibition highlights his aesthetics of "permanent incompletion," visually capturing the fading sensibilities of the analog era in today's digital image-consuming society.
A special highlight of the exhibition is a selection of over 20 large-format art posters featuring Kitada’s iconic characters with warm, encouraging messages such as “Cheer up!”, “Happy Birthday”, and “We can do it together.” Also on view are five books authored by Kitada and original drawings from his <Tokyo Drawing> series.
Artist Biography | KITADA TETSUYA
Born in the mid-1950s in Chigasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, Kitada graduated from Tama Art University in Tokyo with a degree in graphic design. Since the 1970s, he has worked at the heart of Japan’s subculture scene, spanning manga, character design, animation, and fashion.
His major works include “P-chan,” the beloved character from a 1990s Fuji TV children’s program, the fashion and manga crossover series RAP CITY, and a series of alphabet characters that garnered wide acclaim.
Kitada has collaborated with various corporations such as Mitsubishi, Subaru, and Tsutaya. He won the Gold Prize in the Advertising Division at the 1999 New York Festivals and has designed over 60 book covers throughout his career. More recently, his work has explored the aging of materials and the temporal nature of emotions, fulfilling an archival role in preserving Japanese pop culture.
