갤러리 콜론비는 일본 그래픽 디자이너이자 예술가인 키타다 테츠야(KITADA TETSUYA, 北田哲也)의 개인전 《인 마이 룸, 서울》을 개최한다. 본 전시는 일본 치가사키의 크리에이티브 스페이스 하야시(CREATIVE SPACE HAYASHI)와의 공동 기획으로, 키타다의 작품을 국내에 본격적으로 소개하는 첫 번째 전시다.
전시 제목 《인 마이 룸, 서울》은 작가가 자신의 방에서 완성한 작품들과 일상을 함께하며, 생활공간 자체를 전시 공간으로 바라보는 독창적인 태도에서 출발한다. 그의 작업은 감정의 파편들, 유년기의 정서, 대중문화의 흔적이 뒤섞여 형성된 캐릭터 유니버스를 통해 단순한 귀여움을 넘어 삶의 이야기와 시대적 감성을 드러낸다.
작품 전반은 키타다가 구축해 온 고유한 시각 언어와 감정의 잔상을 담고 있으며, 드로잉, 그래픽 디자인, 출판 등 다양한 매체를 넘나든다. 이번 전시는 ‘불완전한 완성’이라는 키타다의 미학을 통해, 디지털 소비 이미지 시대에서 점차 사라져 가는 감정들을 시각적으로 포착한다.
특히 이번 전시에서는 키타다의 캐릭터들을 통해 “힘내!”, “해피 버스데이”, “둘이라면 문제없어.” 등 따뜻한 위로와 응원의 메시지를 담은 대형 아트 포스터 20여 점과 키타다가 쓴 5점의 책, 오리지널 드로잉 시리즈 <도쿄 드로잉> 을 선보인다.
작가 소개 | 키타다 테츠야 KITADA TETSUYA
1950년대 중반 일본 가나가와현 치가사키에서 출생. 도쿄 다마미술대학 그래픽디자인과를 졸업한 후 그래픽 디자이너로 활동했으며, 만화, 캐릭터 디자인, 애니메이션, 패션 등 다양한 장르에서 1970년대부터 현재까지 일본 서브컬처의 중심에서 작업을 이어오고 있다.
대표작으로는 1990년대 후지TV 아동 프로그램의 캐릭터로 선풍적인 인기를 끈 ‘P짱’, 패션 브랜드 및 만화로 널리 알려진 《RAP CITY》, 알파벳 캐릭터 시리즈 등이 있다.
미쓰비시, 스바루, 츠타야 등 다양한 기업과 협업했으며, 1999년 뉴욕 페스티벌 광고 부문 금상 수상, 60여 권의 서적 표지 디자인 등 다채로운 경력을 쌓아왔다. 최근에는 소재의 에이징과 감정의 시간성을 조형화하는 작업을 통해 일본 대중문화의 아카이브적 역할을 수행하고 있다.

Gallery ColonB is pleased to present In My Room, Seoul, a solo exhibition by Japanese graphic designer and artist Kitada Tetsuya (KITADA TETSUYA, 北田哲也). This exhibition is co-organized with CREATIVE SPACE HAYASHI in Chigasaki, Japan, and marks the artist’s first major introduction to Korean audiences.
The title In My Room, Seoul stems from Kitada’s unique perspective of treating his personal room not just as a living space, but as an exhibition site where everyday life and artistic creation coexist. His works construct a character universe shaped by fragments of emotion, childhood sentimentality, and traces of popular culture—offering more than simple cuteness by capturing layered narratives and the spirit of an era.
Spanning across drawing, graphic design, and publishing, Kitada’s oeuvre encapsulates a distinct visual language and emotional resonance. This exhibition highlights his aesthetics of "permanent incompletion," visually capturing the fading sensibilities of the analog era in today's digital image-consuming society.
A special highlight of the exhibition is a selection of over 20 large-format art posters featuring Kitada’s iconic characters with warm, encouraging messages such as “Cheer up!”, “Happy Birthday”, and “We can do it together.” Also on view are five books authored by Kitada and original drawings from his <Tokyo Drawing> series.
Artist Biography | KITADA TETSUYA
Born in the mid-1950s in Chigasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, Kitada graduated from Tama Art University in Tokyo with a degree in graphic design. Since the 1970s, he has worked at the heart of Japan’s subculture scene, spanning manga, character design, animation, and fashion.
His major works include “P-chan,” the beloved character from a 1990s Fuji TV children’s program, the fashion and manga crossover series RAP CITY, and a series of alphabet characters that garnered wide acclaim.
Kitada has collaborated with various corporations such as Mitsubishi, Subaru, and Tsutaya. He won the Gold Prize in the Advertising Division at the 1999 New York Festivals and has designed over 60 book covers throughout his career. More recently, his work has explored the aging of materials and the temporal nature of emotions, fulfilling an archival role in preserving Japanese pop culture.
