NEXUS
나는 사람이 많이 사는 도시에 살다 보니 자연스럽게 사람이 관심의 대상이 되었다.
인간은 사회적 동물이므로 관계 안에서 성장하고 생존함에도 불구하고 사람 사이에 관계를 맺고 소중히 하는 일은 내게 늘 어려운 숙제이고 세상에 대한 경험치가 쌓일수록 더 어려워지는 것 같다. 나의 작품은, 늘 어려운 도전처럼 느껴지는 ‘관계 맺기‘에 관한 생각과 자세를 이야기한 것이다.
‘연결’이나 ‘결합’이라는 뜻을 가진 ‘넥서스(Nexus)'의 기본적인 형태는 유기체적 덩어리들이다. 원시 생명체처럼 보이는 유기체의 형태들은 개별적으로 놓여 있기도 하지만, 두세 덩어리씩 얽히면서 서로 기대어 의지하는 것 같은 모습을 만들어내고 있다. 흰 덩어리들이 서로 얽히고설켜 뭐 하나를 빼내기 어려울 것 같은 형상이다. 석고를 깎아 유기적인 굴곡 형태를 빚어 만든 작은 개체는 피스가 늘어날수록 서로 맞물리고 옭아매는 관계의 결합으로 나타났다. 혼자일 때는 서지 못하고 서로 의지해야 하는 한자 '사람 人(인)'자 처럼 관계를 이야기한다.
완벽하게 맞물린 듯 보이지만, 가까이 들여다보면 모듈 사이사이에 작은 틈이 존재한다. 틈, 사이라는 것은 결국은 미완의 공간이다. 완성되지 않은 공간이 완성을 향한 과정인 것처럼 인간으로서 성숙되어가는 과정과도 비슷하다. 주변에 좋은 영향력을 미칠 수 있고 배려심을 가질 수 있는지 이 작업을 통해 자연스럽게 스미고자 했다.

NEXUS
Living in a bustling city with a dense population naturally led me to focus on people as the main subject of interest. While humans are social creatures who grow and survive within relationships, forming and cherishing connections with others has always been a challenging task for me. The more life experience I accumulate, the more daunting this challenge seems to become. My work reflects my thoughts and approach to the inherently difficult task of “building relationships.”
The fundamental form of Nexus, which means “connection” or “link,” consists of organic masses. These organic shapes, reminiscent of primitive life forms, sometimes exist individually, but often interweave in groups of two or three, appearing to lean on and rely on one another. The white masses are entangled in such a way that it seems nearly impossible to separate one from the others. As the number of pieces increases, the small entities—carved from plaster into organic, curved forms—manifest as an interconnected and intertwined web of relationships.
Like the Chinese character for “person” (人, in), which illustrates mutual reliance, my work speaks about relationships that cannot be sustained alone. Though they appear perfectly interlocked, a closer inspection reveals small gaps between the modules. These gaps, or spaces in between, represent an incomplete state—unfinished spaces that, like the human journey toward maturity, are part of a process striving for completion. Through this work, I sought to reflect on whether I can exert a positive influence on others and cultivate a sense of empathy and consideration, letting these values naturally permeate through my art.
