작가 소개
아츠시 카네오야는Atsushi Kaneoya(b.1989~)는 치바현에서 태어났고, 요코하마 미술 대학에서 공예 디자인을 전공하였다. 그는 전시회에서 봤던 아벨람 민족(파푸아뉴기니의 부족)의 가면에 매료된 후 아프리카와 파푸아뉴기니의 민족 가면을 연구하게 되었고, 그때부터 애니미즘을 주요 주제로 재치있고 기발하며 유니크한 작품을 만들어 왔다.
그는 크로쉐, 코바늘뜨기 테크닉으로 작업한다. 조형 예술과 조각의 기술은 처음에는 거친 덩어리가 있고 그 다음에는 그 덩어리의 형상이 드러나는 방식으로 만들어진다. 한편, 뜨개질에 의한 3차원 모델링은 가장자리에서부터 형상이 점차 펼쳐지는 방식이다. 그 형태는 뜨개질을 하기 전에는 존재하지 않는 것이다. 이렇듯 우리 곁에 존재하지만 보이지 않는 존재(작가는 ‘아바타’라고 지칭)에 형태를 부여하고, 그것의 이미지를 뚜렷하게 드러낸다.
2019년 AFAF, 3331 Artfair 등 아트페어에 참여하였고 서울과 부산에서 개인전과 그룹전을 열었다. 현대백화점 본점(서울, 압구정)에서 단독 팝업전시를 진행하는 등 활발한 활동을 펼치고 있다.

Artist Introduction
Atsushi Kaneoya (b. 1989) was born in Chiba, Japan, and graduated from Yokohama University of Art and Design with a major in Craft and Design. He was captivated by the masks of the Abelam people (a tribe from Papua New Guinea) during an exhibition, which led him to study traditional masks from Africa and Papua New Guinea. Since then, he has focused on animism as a central theme, creating unique, witty, and imaginative works.
Kaneoya primarily works with crochet techniques, using a combination of sculptural and craft art processes. His creative approach begins with rough masses that gradually reveal their forms. In contrast, three-dimensional modeling through crochet starts at the edges and expands outward, bringing into existence shapes that did not exist prior to the act of crocheting. Through this process, he gives form and visibility to unseen presences around us, which he refers to as “Avatars.”
Since participating in AFAF and the 3331 Art Fair in 2019, Kaneoya has held several solo and group exhibitions in Seoul and Busan. He has also gained recognition for his solo pop-up exhibition at the Hyundai Department Store Apgujeong Main Branch in Seoul, actively expanding his artistic presence both domestically and internationally.
