와타나베 메이(b.1989~)는 니가타현 출생으로 대학에서 조각을 전공하고 현재 대학원에서 박사과정을 밟고 있다. 그녀의 인물들은 특정 인물의 초상화가 아닌, 가상현실 속에서 존재하는 '무기질적이고 가변적인 신체’이다. 현실과 가상이 복잡하게 얽힌 현대 사회를 배경으로 실재와 가상이 교차하는 모습을 표현하고자 한다. 사람들이 의상과 메이크업을 통해 스스로 정의하는 ‘자신’이 사회에서 어떻게 표현되는지를 작품에 담고있다.퍼티를 판넬 위에 얹어 깎아내고 채색하는 제작 기법으로 형태의 변화를 탐구하고, 새로운 이미지를 만들어낸다. 이로써 와타나베 메이만의 '아름다움'이 정의된다.
한국 국제아트페어(KIAF)를 비롯하여 한국과 일본의 여러 아트페어에 출품하였으며 2010년부터 개인전과 그룹전을 열어오고 있다.
Mei Watanabe (b. 1989) was born in Niigata Prefecture and majored in sculpture at university. She is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in printmaking at the graduate school. Her figures are not portraits of specific individuals but rather 'inorganic and mutable bodies' existing in virtual reality. Watanabe seeks to depict the intersection of reality and virtuality within the context of a modern society where the real and the virtual are intricately intertwined. Her work explores how individuals define themselves through clothing and makeup and how this self-definition is expressed in society. Through her technique of applying and carving putty on panels, she investigates changes in form, creating new images that define her unique concept of 'beauty.' Watanabe has exhibited her work at various art fairs in Korea and Japan, including the Korea International Art Fair (KIAF), and has held numerous solo and group exhibitions since 2010.
