코지로 마츠모토는(b.1976~)는 도쿄 출생으로 일본 타마 예술대학에서 순수미술을 전공하고 석사학위를 취득했다. 일본 아카데미 미술 교육과 일본 전통화 특유의 섬세하고 숙련된 기법으로 그만의 미학적 세계관을 펼쳐 왔다. 얼핏 보면 인물의 선이 강조된 일러스트 스타일이라고 생각할 수 있지만 더 들여다보면 정밀한 묘사와 예민한 붓 터치, 폭넓은 컬러 스펙트럼으로 깊이 있게 완성된 페인팅이다.
코지로의 작품에는 어린 소녀, 소년 그리고 상상 속의 동물들이 등장한다. 어린 소녀의 이미지는 수퍼플랫(일본의 만화, 애니메이션 등 오타쿠 문화를 상위 예술로 끌어올리는 개념)의 모에(일본 만화나 에니메이션의 그림체) 미소녀 캐릭터를 따르고 있지만 섹슈얼리티보다는 귀여움과 사랑스러움을 강조한다. 이러한 주인공들은 작가의 딸이 보는 만화의 주인공이자, 작가의 딸을 투영하고 있기 때문이다.
인재를 나게 하고 복을 가져다준다고 알려진 용, 기린 등 전설의 동물들은 일본의 오래된 사찰 등에 기록된 벽화와 고서적에서의 철저한 고증을 통해 그만의 스타일로 재해석하였다. 작가는 최근 독일, 홍콩, 미국, 일본, 중국, 대만, 이스라엘 등에서 전시를 열어 왔고, 그의 작품을 사랑하는 다양한 컬렉터 층을 형성하고 있다.
Kojiro Matsumoto (b. 1976), born in Tokyo, Japan, studied Fine Arts at Tama Art University, where he earned a master’s degree. He has cultivated a unique aesthetic worldview through the delicate and skilled techniques characteristic of Japanese academic art education and traditional Japanese painting. While his work may initially appear to emphasize line in an illustration style, closer examination reveals meticulously crafted paintings with precise details, sensitive brushwork, and a broad color spectrum. Matsumoto's works depict young girls, boys, and imaginative animals. The young girls follow the Superflat concept and the moe (cute anime or manga) aesthetic, but focus on cuteness and charm rather than sexuality. These characters reflect both the protagonists in his daughter’s favorite manga and a projection of his daughter herself. Legendary creatures, such as dragons and kirin, known for bringing fortune and nurturing talent, are reinterpreted in Matsumoto's distinctive style, informed by meticulous research of ancient temple murals and historical texts. Recently, he has held exhibitions in Germany, Hong Kong, the United States, Japan, China, Taiwan, and Israel, and has established a diverse collector base that appreciates his work.
