2022년에 이어 두 번째로 한국에서 열리는 이번 전시의 주제는 도시 공간의 익명성, 소비와 문화에 관한 것이다. 제목 "스턱(stuck)"의 의미는 영어 뜻 그대로 ‘막힌, 꼼짝 못 하는’의 의미일 수도 있고, (붙이는) "스티커(sticker)"라는 단어에서 유래한 의미이기도 하다.
The theme of this second exhibition in Korea, following the one in 2022, is the anonymity of urban spaces and consumerism and culture. The title "Stuck" may have the literal meaning of "unable to move" in English, or it may be derived from the word "sticker," meaning (attaching).
어렸을 때, 부모님은 내가 집 곳곳에 스티커를 붙이는 것을 그다지 좋아하지 않으셨다. 학교에서도 마찬가지였다. 스티커를 붙이는 느낌은 다소 설렜고 약간의 죄책감이 섞여 있었다.
스티커는 수수하지만 매우 간단하게 할 수 있는 자기표현이라고 생각한다.
몇몇 도시의 벽에는 수많은 스티커가 붙여 있다.
그렇다면 그 도시들의 특성은 무엇일까? 도시 공간에서는 많은 것들이 유행중이고 그것들은 매일 소비된다. 또한 도시 공간은 사람들을 익명의 존재로 만든다. 그 익명의 사람들은 도시 공간에서 자신을 소비하고 표현한다. 한 가지 예로 운동화를 들 수 있다.
스티커는 자신을 드러내기 위한 도구이자 매개체이기도 하지만, 동시에 무언가를 은폐하는 측면도 있다. 이는 자기표현의 장소이자 동시에 익명성을 지닌 도시공간과도 같다.
When I was a kid, my parents warned me about my putting stickers in my house. I was also told that such behavior was inappropriate at school.
The feeling of putting up stickers was somewhat exciting, but also accompanied by a bit of guilt.
I guess sticker is a modest but very simple way of self-expression.
In some cities now, many stickers are on the walls.
Then, what are the characteristics of those cities? I think one of them is urban space. In urban space, many things are in vogue. They are consumed daily. Urban space makes people somewhat anonymous. People consume and express themselves in urban spaces－one example is sneakers.
Sticker is a medium to uncover oneself as a tool, but at the same time, they have the aspect of covering up something. It is like an urban space that is both a place of self-expression and anonymity.
