국대호는 최근 ‘스트라이프(Stripe)’, ‘컬러블록(Color Block)’, ‘컬러필드(Color Field)’, 라인(Line)’ 등의 작품 시리즈를 통해 작가만의 ‘색(Color)’을 주제로 작업에 매진해 왔다. 이 시리즈들은 작가만의 색채 감각과 끊임없이 붓을 긋는 수행을 통해 만들어진 결과물로 본질을 드러내는 끊임없는 연구이자, 시도이다.
갤러리 콜론비에서 2022년 7월 15일에 막을 올리는 개인전 <움직이는 색들 Colors in motion> 역시 색과 선의 경험을 디지털 회화(Digital Painting)로 확장하는 새로운 시도이다. 작가만의 ‘색(Color)’을 디지털 매체를 통해 재현하고 디지털 이미지와 회화의 간극을 탐색하여 감상자에게 신선한 경험을 선사하고자 한다.
‘스트라이프’ 색면회화는 기존에 명명된 컬러의 이름들로는 규정지을 수 없는 다양한 색채의 어울림, 붓을 긋는 섬세한 힘과 속도에 의해 만들어지는 풍부한 질감으로 파동이 큰 진동을 일으키며 관람객과 교감한다. 선과 색이라는 단순한 요소로 만들어진 회화적 공간은 반복과 변주로 겹겹이 쌓여 화려하고 다채로우면서 명료하다. 무수히 많은 컬러의 조합으로 수평적 형태를 이룬 작품에는 영화나 여행 중 풍경이나 기억 등 시공간의 응축, 함축의 의미를 담고자 했다.
Artist Guk Dae-Ho, through art series such as ‘Stripe,’ ‘Color Block,’ ‘Color Field,’ ‘Line,’ and other recent series, has explored the theme of “color.” These series, formed through Guk’s distinct ideas of “color” and the toil of his relentless brushstrokes, are products of experimentations and endeavors that reveal “essence.”
Guk’s solo exhibition <Colors in Motion>, which will open at Gallery Colon B on July 15th of 2022, is an attempt at using digital art (digital paintings) to expand the experience and perception of colors and lines. The exhibition intends to portray the author’s distinct artistic colors through digital media and seeks to explore the differences between paintings and digital images to offer audiences a fresh artistic experience.
Blending various colors and hues incapable of being defined by pre-existing labels, the color-field paintings of the ‘Stripe’ exhibition, through its rich textures formed through the precise yet forceful strokes of the artist’s speedy brush, seek to evoke powerful, reverberating responses in its audiences. Made only of simple elements of line and color, the artistic expanse in these works is layered with repetitions and variations, colorful and clear. Manifested horizontally by a countless combinations of hues, these artworks were intended to contain the landscapes and memories found in a scene from a film, a view during a journey, and similar meaningful condensations of time and space.

전통적인 회화가 디지털의 영역에 들어온 것은 회화만의 색감과 섬세한 질감을 표현할 만큼 하드웨어 즉 디스플레이가 발전했기 때문이다. 그러나 디스플레이는 캔버스 위 물감의 농도와 작가의 힘으로 섬세하게 표현된 질감과 광택, 캔버스의 옆면 마감 등의 감각, 작품이 전시된 공간의 태양광, 크기의 느낌까지 담기엔 분명 한계가 있다. 디지털 이미지는 회화를 구성하는 질감, 광택 등 복합적인 작용을 제거하고, 질감이 부재한 매끄러운 정면 이미지만을 전달한다. 이와 같은 회화와 디지털 이미지의 근본적인 차이에도 불가하고 발전된 디지털 하드웨어, 디바이스의 확산은 실물을 직접 감상하는 것보다 디지털 이미지를 더욱 쉽게, 자주 접할 수 있게 한다.
이번 전시에서는 회화의 특성을 최대한 살린 디지털 이미지를 만들고, 둘 사이에 필연적으로 존재하는 차이를 바탕으로 회화와 디지털 이미지의 관계에 대해 생각한다. 이번 <스트라이프> 디지털 회화에서는 컬러 레이어의 순서를 일정한 시간성을 두고 교차, 변화하여 과거에 붓이 지나간 레이어의 순서와 이것이 보여지는 시각적인 순서를 의도적으로 뒤섞는다. 색의 순서는 바뀌고, 결과적으로 실제 공간에서 총체적으로 경험할 수 있는 감각은 디지털 작품을 통해 확장되고, 캔버스 안에 담긴 기억 속 시공간은 디지털 화면으로 이동되어 현재에서 생동감있게 움직인다.
Traditional art has entered the digital realm thanks to the development of hardware (that is, the display) capable of expressing the color and texture found in conventional paintings. However, a display cannot encapsulate the concentration of paint on the canvas, the artist's power, the texture and luster expressed in fine detail, the touch of the side of the canvas, the sunlight of the space in which the work is displayed, and the sensation of size. Digital images eliminate texture, gloss, and other complex elements that make up conventional paintings, and only deliver smooth frontal images. Despite these inherent differences in paintings and digital art, technological advancements in display and hardware have made possible easier, more frequent access to digital images as opposed to conventional paintings.
This exhibition, featuring digital works that nonetheless emulate traditional paintings’ advantages to the farthest extent possible, reflects upon the relationship between canvas and digital art and remembers the fundamental differences that exist between the two. In this digital exhibition of <Stripe >, the order of ‘layers’ is crossed and altered regularly, deliberately blending the order of layers the artist had painted onto the canvas and the visual order in which they are displayed. As a result of changing the displayed order of these works’ layers, the sensations that can be felt through this work are expanded by its digitalization, and the memories of the process of creation, contained in the canvas, are moved onto the digital screen and live vividly in the present.
