김중용
나는 전시된 인간이다. 아무런 전시도, 작품계획도 없던 때도 작가였고, 동시에 거리를 지나는 동양인이며, 아빠였다.
지하철에 앉아 책을 거꾸로 든 사람처럼, 그렇게 독서하는 사람으로 풍경의 일부가 되었던 것과 마찬가지인 기만적 이미지였다. 자신을 하나의 사물로 바라보는, 스스로에 부여한 규칙이었다. 내가 모르는 상황에서도 전시되었고, 지금도 그렇다.
그래서 나의 작업은 언제나 '만드는 행위' 자체가 가능하도록 설계된 규칙과 조건을 세우는 일 이였다. 그리고 그 체계에 머물면서 해야하는 것을 하는 것이였다.
이 과정을 반복하자 '만드는 행위'를 지속하기 위한 명분에 몰두하고, 결과에서 발생한 막연한 소득들은 기만적 과정을 통해 의도가 되었다.
I am an exhibited human. Even when I had no exhibitions or artistic plans, I was still an artist, an Asian man passing through the streets, and a father.
Like someone sitting on a subway holding a book upside down, I was a deceptive image, becoming part of the scenery as 'one who reads.' It was a self-imposed rule—to view myself as a singular object. I was being exhibited even in situations I was unaware of, and I still am.
Therefore, my work has always been about establishing the rules and conditions that make the 'performance of making' itself possible. It was about staying within that system and doing what must be done.
As this process repeated, I became absorbed in the justification for sustaining the 'performance of making,' and the vague gains resulting from the output became 'intent' through a deceptive process.“
