변경수 Byun Kyungsoo
변경수는 서울대학교 조소과 학사 및 석사 과정을 마치고, 영국 UCL 슬레이드 미술대학원에서 석사 학위를 받았다.
조각을 기반으로 인체 형상과 감정의 심리적 깊이를 탐구하는 작업을 이어오고 있으 며, 2007년 이후 ‘사랑’, ‘불안’, ‘고독’ 등 인간 내면의 본질적 감정에 대한 관심을 중심으로 작업 세계 를 확장해왔다. 초기에는 브론즈와 석고 등 전통적인 조각 재료를 사용했으나, 최근에는 크리스탈 레진, 스컬피 등 새 로운 소재를 활용하여 감정의 실체를 섬세하고 서정적인 조형 언어로 시각화하고 있다.
그의 작업은 릴케의 시처럼 정서적이며 철학적 깊이를 지닌다. 국내외에서 60여 회 이상의 개인전과 그룹전에 참여했으며, 조형성과 내면성을 결합한 현대 조각의 독자적인 방향을 제시한다.

내적 불안의 조각적 단면 / 변경수
불안은 형태를 가질 수도 있다. 내면의 불안이라는 보이지 않는 감각을 물질적 형태로 구현하는 과정에서 이 작업이 탄생했다. 시각적으로 형상화하는 이 시도를 통해 의해 보이지 않는 불안에 실체를 부여된다.
불안은 흐르고, 부유하며, 때로는 가라앉는다. 형태 없이 확산되기도 하고, 응축되어 무거운 덩어리가 되기도 한다. 작품 속 작은 인간 형상들은 그러한 불안의 조각들이다. 3cm 크기의 수많은 인간 형상들은 서로 엉켜 있으며, 부유하는듯하지만 무질서하게 밀집된 이 군상들은 하나의 덩어리를 이룬다. 이를 통해 불안이 가진 복합적인 결이 드러나며, 색과 형태의 반복 속에서 개 별성을 유지하면서도 하나의 흐름을 만들어낸다.
작업은 불안을 직시하고 감각적으로 드러내는 데 집중한다. 무한히 증식하는 것처럼 보이는 형상들 사이에서, 내면과 마주하게 된다. 불안을 구체화하는 과정은 내면의 혼란을 마주하는 시도이기도 하다. 형상들의 밀집도와 색채의 변주는 불안의 강도와 성질을 표현한다. 밀도 높게 쌓인 색면은 불안이 쌓이는 과정을, 다양한 색채는 불안의 다층적 성격을 보여준다. 서로 다른 색상의 층위는 시간의 흐름에 따라 변화하는 내면의 풍경을 암시한다.
Mess Mass는 혼란과 밀도를 의미하는 동시에, 불안을 담아내는 하나의 표면이다. 이는 내면의 감각적 기록이며, 끝없이 생성되는 불안의 움직임을 포착한 흔적이다. 내면에 존재하는 불안의 실체를 드러내는 이 작업을 통해, 보이지 않는 것의 형상화 가능성을 탐색한다.

Byun Kyungsoo earned both his BFA and MFA in Sculpture from Seoul National University and later received his MA from the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL in the UK.
His work, grounded in sculpture, delves into the psychological depths of human emotions through the human form. Since 2007, he has expanded his practice around fundamental inner emotions such as love, anxiety, and loneliness. While he began with traditional sculptural materials like bronze and plaster, he has more recently turned to new media such as crystal resin and Sculpey, employing them to delicately and poetically visualize the substance of emotions.
His work is imbued with a lyrical and philosophical depth, reminiscent of Rilke's poetry. With over 60 solo and group exhibitions in Korea and abroad, Byun presents a unique path in contemporary sculpture that combines formal experimentation with introspective sensibility.

The Sculptural Fragment of Inner Anxiety

Anxiety can take form. This work emerged from the process of giving physical shape to the invisible sensation of inner anxiety. Through the attempt to render anxiety visible, the work gives tangible substance to what is otherwise unseen.
Anxiety flows, floats, and sometimes sinks. It can diffuse without form or condense into a heavy mass. The tiny human figures in this piece are fragments of such anxiety. These 3 cm figures are entangled with one another, appearing to float yet densely gathered in chaotic clusters that form a single mass. Through this, the complex textures of anxiety are revealed—maintaining individuality within repetition of shape and color, while also creating a unified flow.
The work focuses on directly confronting and expressing anxiety through sensory means. Among these seemingly infinite, proliferating forms, one is led to face the inner self. The act of giving shape to anxiety becomes an attempt to confront internal turmoil. The density of the forms and variation in color express the intensity and nature of that anxiety. The densely layered color fields represent the accumulation of anxious feelings, while the diverse hues reflect the multifaceted nature of anxiety. These stratified layers of color imply a shifting inner landscape shaped by the passage of time.
Mess Mass signifies both chaos and density. It is a surface that holds anxiety—a sensory record of the inner world, a trace of the endless movement of anxiety as it emerges. Through this work, Byun explores the possibility of giving form to what cannot be seen.
