2024 허욱 개인전, <첨첨(添添, Cheom-Cheom)>
<첨첨(添添)>은 ‘더하고 더한다’는 뜻을 담은 주제로 직선과 곡선이 만들어내는 조화 속에서 끊임없이 확장되는 ‘첨첨’의 철학을 담고 있다 이번 전시에서는 새롭게 작업한 회화 52점과 스테인리스 조각 4점이 공개된다. 매번 같은 주제 안에서 변화하고 발전하는 그의 예술적 실험과 창의성, 색채 감각을 가득 느낄 수 있다.
직선방식
이번 전시에서 허욱은 직선과 곡선을 활용해 독창적인 조형 언어를 선보인다. 경계가 명확한 면들이 캔버스를 리드미컬하게 가로지르고, 섬세한 색감과 대담한 패턴이 어우러져 생동감 넘치는 화면을 만든다. 특히 최근 작업에서는 ‘직선 방식’이 돋보인다.
허욱의 직선 방식은 단순히 선을 곧게 긋는 데서 끝나지 않는다. 곡선을 먼저 그리고, 그 위에 캔버스 가장자리와 경계선을 기준으로 T자를 대어 건축적인 직선을 만들어낸다. 이 과정에서 곡선과 직선이 어우러지며 새로운 조형적 감각을 만들어낸다.
작가 소개
허욱(b. 1973)은 예원학교와 서울예고를 졸업하고 프랑스로 유학해 깽빼흐 미술학교와 파리 국립미술학교에서 수학했다. 이후 뉴욕, 런던, 시드니, 북경 등 전 세계에서 활발하게 활동하며 주목받고 있다. 국립현대미술관 공공미술 프로젝트와 위스키 브랜드 ‘맥켈란’, 친환경 브랜드 **‘IWP(IWASPLASTIC)’**와의 협업을 통해 건축적 요소가 돋보이는 회화 작품을 선보이며 예술 활동의 영역을 넓혀가고 있다.
2024 Heo Wook Exhibition: <Cheom-Cheom (添添)>
<Cheom-Cheom (添添)>, meaning “adding and adding,” encapsulates Heo Wook’s unique artistic vision. This exhibition features 52 new paintings and 4 stainless steel sculptures.
linear technique
In this exhibition, Heo Wook explores a distinctive visual language through a dynamic interplay of straight and curved lines. Sharp, defined edges rhythmically traverse the canvas, while bold patterns and delicate, vibrant colors create a visually engaging experience.
Particularly notable in his recent works is the emphasis on a “linear technique.” Rather than drawing straight lines directly, Heo first sketches curves, then uses the edges of the canvas as guides, employing a T-square to transform these curves into architectural straight lines. This method harmonizes organic curves and structured lines, resulting in a fresh and compelling aesthetic.
About the Artist
Born in 1973, Heo Wook graduated from the prestigious Yewon School and Seoul Arts High School in South Korea before studying at Quimper School of Fine Arts and the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His work has been exhibited globally in cities such as New York, London, Sydney, and Beijing, earning him international recognition.
Heo has participated in public art projects with the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Korea and collaborated with brands such as Macallan and the eco-friendly label IWP (IWASPLASTIC). His works, often noted for their architectural elements, continue to expand the boundaries of contemporary art.
