The Sharing

This exhibition serves as a vital locus where five artists, each possessing distinct artistic indices, encounter one another under the overarching values of 'Sharing' and 'Coexistence.‘

Rather than coercing individual practices into a pre-coordinated thematic straitjacket, we have prioritized the creative autonomy inherent in each artist's trajectory, focusing instead on the practical act of 'spatial occupation.' This spontaneous and liberated mode of composition—forged through rigorous dialogues and profound inquiries into the essence of art—paradoxically converges toward a singular, monumental orientation: a persistent exploration into the core of one’s own existence.

The five distinct worlds unfolded within this gallery delve into the layers of individual contemplation and their subsequent formalization, occurring at the very interface between the self and the world.

Kim Joongyong experiments with the persistence of the 'act of making' by imposing strict rules and conditions that define the self as an 'exhibited object.'

Park Doyoun, acknowledging the inherent limitations of three-dimensional representation, embalms the fleeting moments of physical contact into planar traces, thereby exposing the imperfect nature of how objects are perceived.

Park Youngchul records the coordinates where internal choices meet the external world in a luminous instant, proposing a recovery of the teeming possibilities found in childhood imagination.

Lee Sukjoon utilizes analog media to paradoxically critique the contemporary attitude of subjectively analyzing and absorbing images amidst the deluge of digital media.

Byun Kyungsoo confronts primordial anxiety through a fragile yet vivid 'light of love' emerging from the inner abyss, gauging the very form of essence.

'The Sharing' aspires toward a state where individual worldviews maintain their unique textures while harmoniously occupying a shared physical space. The multi-layered resonance formed when five lines, previously tracing disparate trajectories, intersect at the point of 'sharing' reflects the most honest and essential posture an artist can assume. Through this dynamic interplay of independent identities, viewers will witness the inevitable process of how the instinctive will to create validates an individual and, ultimately, reconnects them back to the world.

I am an exhibited human. Even when I had no exhibitions or artistic plans, I was still an artist, an Asian man passing through the streets, and a father.

Like someone sitting on a subway holding a book upside down, I was a deceptive image, becoming part of the scenery as 'one who reads.' It was a self-imposed rule—to view myself as a singular object. I was being exhibited even in situations I was unaware of, and I still am.

Therefore, my work has always been about establishing the rules and conditions that make the 'performance of making' itself possible. It was about staying within that system and doing what must be done.

As this process repeated, I became absorbed in the justification for sustaining the 'performance of making,' and the vague gains resulting from the output became 'intent' through a deceptive process.“

This body of work originates from an attempt to prove the existence of a subject not through the "construction of form", but through the "trace of contact“. Traditionally, sculpture has sought to fix the essence of a subject by three-dimensionally reproducing it. In contrast, I focus on the inherent incompleteness and limitations of such fixation.

In the process, the points where two bodies (myself and my wife) meet—kissing lips, a hand resting on a chest, interlaced knees—are captured using alginate. The body, originally a three-dimensional curved surface, is flattened onto the floor through the elasticity of the alginate and then transposed into a planar relief by pouring plaster over it. In this transition, the volume of the body is castrated; however, in exchange, the minute textures and the physical pressure of the moment where two beings were pressed together are vividly translated.

These sculptural fragments, distorted into planes, reflect the "form of limitation" that our perception inevitably encounters when attempting to fully capture a subject. We believe we possess or understand an object by fixing its form, yet a fixed form can never fully contain the entirety or the true essence of the subject.

The sculptures, aligned at a consistent height along the wall, are a persistent attempt to seize the fleeting event of contact. At the same time, they are a chronological record of the sections of perception that can never be complete. Through these flattened, taxidermied records of skin, the viewer confronts the physical density of two existences touching—and the profound incompleteness of perception hidden beneath that surface.

Cloud-Sheep(s,up)

Constellations of a Being in Contact with the World

This sculpture is an architectural imagination of the invisible, continuous process of choices made within an individual's life, designed so that this internal structure is revealed only at the moment it brushes against the surface of the skin. The points of contact that emerge on the surface glisten in gold, visually evoking the reality that only the traces of results—rather than the entirety of the process—remain in the world. These golden points are scattered like celestial stars, forming the unique constellation of a single human being, inviting the viewer to trace the trajectory of these choices as if navigating a nautical chart.

At the boundary where internal flow meets external light, the form reveals the minute pressures and surface areas of contact. The rhythm of voids and connections gives shape to a hidden dialogue between the interior and the exterior. Ultimately, by recording the coordinates of light generated at the fleeting instant when countless invisible decisions encounter the world, this work serves as a quiet testimony to how an individual connects with the world through the act of living.

Cloud-Sheep(s, up)

Most of us share a childhood memory of gazing at drifting clouds and projecting the forms of familiar animals onto them. In our youth, we spent hours lost in these imaginative vistas; yet today, we rarely find the luxury to look up at the sky. The simple act of discerning a specific form within a cloud carries profound significance upon reflection. Clouds are perpetually suspended above us, accessible to anyone who chooses to lift their head. However, capturing a singular, fleeting moment of an ever-shifting cloud requires an intentional effort from the observer. Furthermore, the experience of imagining a specific animal within an undefined form borders on the sublime act of creating something from nothing.

In our childhood, we unhesitatingly found boundless possibilities within such modest conditions. As adults who have grown within a rigid social context, perhaps we have discarded our "impossible" hopes and grand dreams under the dismissive label of "childlike innocence." There is a lingering regret in a reality where we look down at the ground before our feet rather than toward the distant horizon. Through this work, I propose a moment of progression—a time to reminisce about an era brimming with imagination and potential, and to once again harbor a hopeful future in one's heart.

Within the profound depths of the inner self, countless amorphous masses lie entangled in an impenetrable darkness. These fragments of existence, cast without definition or boundary, generate an inherent anxiety that gradually encroaches upon the conscious "I." They represent the raw, unexamined weight of being, drifting in the void.

Paradoxically, it is a "small light of love" that pierces this obscurity, allowing one to recognize that what was perceived as a threatening void is, in fact, the substance of anxiety that has merely strayed from its essence. Love acts as a perceptual catalyst; it cuts through the shadows of existence, revealing the hidden trajectory of essence amidst the tangled, formless masses.

Yet, a poignant tension remains: the darkness within is boundless, while the light of love that seeks essence is exceedingly small and fragile. When the vast shadows of these existential fragments fill the wall, this faint light can only illuminate enough space to barely discern the flickering contours of essence. Even so, it is through this precarious, fragile light that I choose to confront the infinite abyss of my existence.

Does the future shaped by digital media truly promise an ideal world?

Television broadcasting and new media have woven the world together through images, while simultaneously expanding access to knowledge and experiences once monopolized by a select few. Terms like “global citizen” and “global village” came into vogue, and the world was often described as a shared community of destiny. The very notion of the future seemed to carry within it ideas of “us,” a collective good, communication, and harmony.

Even now, as technology and systems have evolved into far more complex structures, I find myself questioning whether that lingering scent of the future still remains.

This exhibition, Player’s Mindset, presents itself as an exploration of digital media without media. It reflects on the fading capacity for subjective image processing and critical thought in an age where the overwhelming majority both produce and consume digital images.

Images are messages. The structure of the “sentences” they form can be intentional, shaped by the various methods through which images are produced. Living in the era of digital media, we are exposed to far more images than ever before, and thus, even unintentionally, we are in a constant state of receiving messages.

The art world—composed of individuals deeply accustomed to both creating and consuming images—has developed a sensitivity to detecting and analyzing such intentions. Rather than accepting images at face value, it engages them through subjective interpretation and critique.

I hope that this capacity for independent judgment and analysis becomes a fundamental literacy for individuals living in the contemporary digital media landscape. I want us to chew, tear into, taste, and ultimately enjoy images on our own terms.

An exhibition by a media artist, yet without media. Through works composed of analog and retro propaganda-like forms, I attempt to construct a reflection on contemporary digital media.
