At a time when the contemporary art landscape is saturated with the ephemeral,

immediate imagery of digital media and Pop Art, the paintings of Tetsuya Mishima emerge, paradoxically, as a deeply avant-garde manifesto. Marking his first solo exhibition in Korea, Tetsuya Mishima at Gallery ColonB pursues an aesthetic at the very absolute limit of what the human eye and hand can achieve in an era where technology has supplanted organic sight.

Mishima’s canvas is far more than mere representation; it is a battleground of pure materiality. Entirely rejecting the convenience of photography, his practice of painting solely from live models and still lifes in his immediate presence approaches the level of a rigorous spiritual discipline, piercing straight to the essence of the subject. He delves deeply into the inherent textures of his motifs—glass, brass, silk, fruits, and flowers—and translates them onto the canvas with a distinctive, sensory tactile quality using classical oil paints and brushes he resurrects and crafts by hand.

The contemporary sensuality emanating from his still lifes and figures flourishes only upon this rigid scaffolding of classical technique. Heavy layers of oil paint, absorbing and radiating light, offer the viewer a tactile experience that transcends mere vision. In an age overflowing with superficial visual stimuli, this exhibition invites you to confront the profound depth of time revived by the very tip of Tetsuya Mishima’s brush.

나에게 있어 이상적인 미는 오직 고전 회화에만 존재한다.

나는 사진에 의존하지 않는 작업 방식을 고수하며 고전적인 재료를 사용해 잊혀진 고전 회화의 기법을 추구하면서도 현대에만 이뤄낼 수 있는 유화를 그린다.

뛰어난 고전 회화는 입체감과 색채미, 사실성과 힘 있는 터치 등 상반되는 다양한 요소들이 작가의 손길로 융합되어 서로 공명하며 진정한 조화를 빚어낸다.

내가 믿는 이러한 회화적 아름다움에 조금이라도 다가가고 싶은 마음은 지금도 전혀 흔들림이 없다. 그런 나의 각오가 내 작품에도 온전히 스며들어 있다면 더없이 기쁠 것이다.

私にとって理想の美は古典絵画にのみ有る。

写真を使わず描く制作スタイルで、古典的な材料を使用し失われた古典絵画の技術を追求しつつ現代でしか成し得ない油彩画を描く。

優れた古典絵画は立体感と色彩美、写実性と力強いタッチなど、様々な相反する要素が手技によって融合し、お互いを響きあわせ真の調和を奏でている。

そんな自分の信じる絵画美に少しでも近づきたい気持ちは今でも全く揺らいでいない。

その覚悟が自身の絵画にまで表れていたら幸いである。

For me, ideal beauty exists only in classical painting.

I adhere strictly to working without photography, employing classical materials to pursue the lost techniques of old masters — while striving to create oil paintings that could only exist in the present day. Great classical painting achieves a genuine harmony in which seemingly contradictory elements — volume, chromatic beauty, realism, powerful brushwork — are fused by the artist's hand and made to resonate with one another.

My desire to draw even a fraction closer to the painterly beauty I believe in has never wavered. Nothing would give me greater joy than knowing that resolve has permeated every surface of my work.
