들어가며 / 2024 와타나베 메이 개인전 <누군가>
그녀의 인물들은 특정 인물의 초상화가 아닌, 가상현실 속에서 존재하는 '무기질적이고 가변적인 신체’이다. 현실과 가상이 복잡하게 얽힌 현대 사회를 배경으로 실재와 가상이 교차하는 모습을 표현하고자 한다. 사람들이 의상과 메이크업을 통해 스스로 정의하는 ‘자신’이 사회에서 어떻게 표현되는지를 작품에 담고 있다.
퍼티를 판넬 위에 얹어 깎아내고 채색하는 제작 기법으로 형태의 변화를 탐구하고, 새로운 이미지를 만들어낸다. 이로써 와타나베 메이만의 '아름다움'이 정의된다. -콜론비
INTRO / 2024 Watanabe Mei solo exhibition <someone>
Her figures are not portraits of specific people, but ‘inorganic and variable bodies’ that exist in virtual reality. She seeks to express the intersection of reality and virtuality against the backdrop of modern society, where reality and virtuality are complexly intertwined. Her work reflects how people's self-definition through clothing and makeup is expressed in society.
She explores changes in form and creates new images through the production technique of putting putty on a panel, carving it out, and painting it. This defines Mei Watanabe’s unique ‘beauty’. - colonB

나의 작품은 가상의 신체를 주제로 한다. 디지털로 생성된 객체를 모티브로 하여, 3DCG로 물질과 비물질, 현실과 가상이 상호작용하는 형상을 표현한다. 나의 작품은 판넬 위에 퍼티 등 재료를 얹고 깎아내는 기법으로 기본적인 물성을 설정한다.
우리는 옷과 메이크업으로 몸을 꾸미며 스스로의 모습을 형성한다. 옷, 헤어스타일, 메이크업을 통해 몸의 외형을 조작함으로써, 사회 속의 ‘자신’이라는 존재를 나타낸다.
이는 웹상의 가상 환경에서도 마찬가지이다. SNS와 게임 같은 비물질적 환경에서도 사람들은 아이콘과 아바타를 만들어 가상 신체를 형성한다. 가상 세계 속의 신체는 허구적 존재이지만, 관객은 그 안에 '누군가'의 인격이 있다고 상상하게 된다. 정보 네트워크가 발달하면서 웹상의 소통이 일상화되고 가상세계와 현실세계가 밀접히 연결된 오늘날의 디지털 사회에서는, 실존 여부와 상관없이 가상 캐릭터에도 '누군가'의 자아가 표현된다. 나는 이러한 디지털 및 비물질적 가상 신체를 특정 인물이나 캐릭터가 아니라 물리적인 가면의 형태, 즉 변동하는 사람의 이미지로 본다.
이렇듯 나는 물성에 기본을 둔 작품을 통해 허구적이고 무기적인 '누군가'를 어떻게 표현할 수 있을지 탐구하고 있다. - 와타나베 메이
Statement
My work is based on the subject of the virtual body. Based on objects digitally created by 3DCG as motifs, I express the image of a figure in which immaterial and material, real and virtual, interact with each other by using a technique based on materiality, in which I scratch off the painted base on the panel.
We form the appearance of ourselves by dressing our bodies with clothes and makeup. By wearing clothes, hairstyles, and makeup, and by manipulating our body's appearance as a costume, we manifest the existence of "someone" called ourselves in society. This is also the case in virtual environments on the Web. In immaterial environments such as social networking sites and games, people create and select icons and avatars to form virtual bodies. The body is a fictional existence, but the viewer is led to imagine that there is a personality of "someone" in it. With the development of information networks, communication on the Web has become commonplace, and in today's society, where the real and virtual are intricately interrelated, "someone" is expressed in the virtual body as well, regardless of whether it is material or immaterial. I see such digital and immaterial virtual bodies not as specific persons or characters, but as physical appearances that change as guises, in other words, as variable images of persons. I am exploring how the fictional, inorganic "someone" can be expressed through works that involve materiality. -Watanabe mei
