Migration
저는 완성된 작품을 만졌을 때 어떤 느낌일지에 대해 많이 생각합니다. 표면의 질감과 촉감을 연구하는 것이 제가 작업에서 가장 재미있어하는 부분입니다.
과거 캐스팅으로 하는 작업에서도 흙의 감성을 직접 만질 수 있도록 시유하지 않거나 흙으로 시유하고 여러 번 소성하는 등의 다양한 방법을 도모했던 저는 자기소지의 표면 질감 연구를 확장해서, 물리적 한계가 더 넓다고 할 수 있는 조형토의 힘을 빌어 뼈대를 이루고 살과 피부에 자기소지의 아름다운 질감을 적용해 보았습니다. 섬세한 캐스팅용 자기 소지에 익숙했던 제가 거친 알갱이 같은 조형토에 적응하는 데에는 생각보다 시간이 걸렸습니다.
그 무렵 아들 애가 결혼을 하여 가정을 이루고 새로운 공부와 삶을 위하여 외국으로 이주하였습니다. 적응하느라 고군분투하는 아들에게 새로운 삶의 터전은 미래를 알 수 없는 모험의 땅이었지요. 저는 그가 겪는 문화충격이 마치 저의 작업과 비슷하단 생각이 들었습니다. 적지 않은 나이에 작업과 재료를 바꾸었고, 물성이 전혀 다른 두 재료를 함께 적용하는 새 작업은 그 물성의 차이로 인해 소성 후 서로 화합하기가 쉽지 않고, 작품을 완성하는 일은 '마치 이민자가 겪는 문화충격처럼 지난한 과정이고, 결과를 예측할 수 없지만, 이 새로운 도전은 위험이라는 포장지에 쌓인 희망 덩어리이다'...이런 생각으로 지은 아들의 집은 말하자면 미래를 위한 도전과 화합에 관한 이야기입니다.
이 새로운 시도를 통해 저는 과거 재료를 통제하던 습관에서 벗어나 조금은 더 느슨한 방법으로 재료를 다루고, 재료 스스로 불과의 협력을 도모하도록 덜 통제하고 그 결과에 연연하지 않는 자세를 배우게 된 것 같습니다.
재료의 힘을 믿는 것 또, 불의 힘에 의지하고 결과를 맡기는 것. 재료와 과정을 통제하는 자가 아니라 관리하는 자로서 임하는 것.
젖어 있을 때 성형하는 도자기 소지는 건조와 소성 과정을 지나는 동안 수분이 날아가면서 크기가 줄어듭니다. 모든 도예용 소지는 그 종류에 따라 고유의 수축률을 갖고 있으며, 완성된 기물은 제작할 때보다 약 8~14% 정도 작아집니다. 저의 작업은 비교적 수축률이 적은(약 8~9%) 조형토로 뼈대 기물을 만들고 건조 후에 비교적 수축률이 큰(약12~14%) 자기소지(유약을 섞어 융점을 낮추고 안료를 넣은)로 표면을 겹겹이 바르는 것으로 진행합니다. 수축률과 소성온도의 차이 때문에 한 작품에 함께 사용한 두 개의 다른 소지는 불의 시련을 겪은 후 바람과는 다르게 매우 불안정한 상태로 남습니다. 뼈대보다 더 많이 수축해야 하는 자기 소지는 뼈대에 붙지 못하고 터지거나 벗겨져서 그 무게로 내려앉습니다. 물성 차이와 불의 힘으로 진행하는 이 실험적인 과정은 기온과 습도, 진행 속도, 소성 시간, 가마 안의 환경 등 다른 요인에 의해서도 영향을 받는데, 실패의 위험이 따르고 그 결과를 예측하기가 쉽지 않지만, 의외의 아름다운 결과를 가져오기도 합니다.

Migration
I often think about what it would feel like to touch a finished piece. Exploring the textures and tactile sensations of surfaces is one of the most enjoyable aspects of my work.
In the past, even with casted works, I experimented with ways to preserve the natural feel of clay, such as leaving surfaces unglazed or glazing with clay itself and firing multiple times. Expanding my study of surface textures with porcelain clay, I began using the structural potential of sculptural clay as a framework, layering the beautiful textures of porcelain clay over it like skin. Adjusting to the rough, granulated nature of sculptural clay, after having been accustomed to the fine, delicate porcelain clay for casting, took longer than I had expected.
Around that time, my son got married and moved abroad to build a new life and pursue his studies. For him, adapting to a new environment was like venturing into uncharted territory—a land of uncertainty and adventure. Watching him struggle with cultural shocks, I found parallels to my own creative journey. Changing materials and techniques at this stage in my career felt similar to what an immigrant experiences when adjusting to a new culture. The process of combining two materials with entirely different properties often resulted in unpredictable outcomes after firing. Completing a piece was like enduring the challenges of cultural adaptation—an arduous process with uncertain results. Yet, I see this new challenge as a bundle of hope wrapped in the packaging of risk. The house my son built, in a way, embodies the story of future-oriented challenges and the pursuit of harmony.
Through this new attempt, I’ve learned to move away from my old habits of controlling materials and to embrace a more relaxed approach. I now let the materials collaborate with fire, intervening less and freeing myself from being overly attached to outcomes. This process has taught me to trust the power of the materials, rely on the force of fire, and accept the results as they come. I approach my work not as someone who controls materials and processes but as a manager who facilitates their interaction.
When ceramic clay is shaped while moist, it shrinks as moisture evaporates during drying and firing. All clays used for ceramics have unique shrinkage rates, and the final piece is typically 8–14% smaller than its original size. In my work, I use sculptural clay with a relatively low shrinkage rate (about 8–9%) to create the framework. After drying, I apply layers of porcelain clay (with a higher shrinkage rate of about 12–14%) mixed with glaze to lower its melting point and colored with pigments. Due to the differences in shrinkage rates and firing temperatures, these two materials—used together in a single piece—often emerge from the kiln in an unstable state. The porcelain clay, which shrinks more than the framework, may crack, peel, or collapse under its own weight.
This experimental process, driven by the contrast in material properties and the force of fire, is further influenced by variables such as temperature, humidity, the pace of progress, firing time, and the kiln’s internal environment. Although it involves risks and unpredictability, it sometimes produces unexpectedly beautiful results.
Through this journey, I’ve come to see the creative process not simply as a means to an end but as a continuous dialogue with materials, fire, and the environment.
